As young as eight years old, Joseph Z. Leybovich started developing an interest in programming, technology, and ultimately creating video games. Raised by immigrants from Belarus, his mother secured employment at Citibank in New York as a programmer and his father served as an engineer and elevator mechanic, both of whom helped find his passions.
After earning an associate degree in computer programming from the Borough of Manhattan Community College, Mr. Leybovich attended Full Sail University, where he was nominated for an Advanced Achiever Award and was a finalist in a “RoboCode” Tournament in the midst of his studies. He ultimately attained a Bachelor of Computer Science in game development from the university, graduating Salutatorian in 2011. He then entered the technology field as a mobile developer at the firm App Partner before becoming a unity developer for games at Scopely—a global interactive entertainment and mobile-first video game company based in California. He subsequently established himself as a distinguished professional as a software engineer of games at DeNA West, a game client engineer at WGT Media Inc., and a senior software engineer at Meta Co. and Magic Leap.
Since 2020, Mr. Leybovich has excelled as a senior unity engineer at Left Field Labs, a creative technology partner to advertising brands, through which he’s collaborated with such clients as Metavision and played a part in developing cutting-edge household-name technology, applications, and games. Throughout his career, he’s been a believer that learning should never stop, particular in his field, saying that “Every day presents a new opportunity to acquire more knowledge.”
In the midst of climbing the ladder, the passionate game programmer and developer co-founded a nonprofit called the Computational Design Institute in 2018. Also serving as president of its board of directors, the organization was founded with his friends to explore the possibilities of combining science, medical therapy, and virtual reality to address some challenges. One of their significant initiatives has been to develop an app that children in hospice care can use to put on a headset and divert their attention from the medical procedure or process. Incredibly active in this capacity, he’s volunteered with Give Kids the World since 2010, Junior Blind since 2013, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles since 2014, and was involved with Mission Bit for some time. He also previously volunteered at a San Francisco Bay Area high school to assist students in their after-school program; he taught them to develop games, applications, websites, and overall gain a foothold in the tech industry before graduating.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Leybovich aspires to become a self-employed entrepreneur. He’s currently engaged in several auxiliary undertakings, hoping they might become lucratve and eventually enable him to be his own boss. In addition, he’s in the process of writing a book about software development.
